Walnut

Origins

Geographical Origins: Walnuts are believed to have originated in ancient Persia (modern-day Iran). They are now widely grown in countries such as the USA (California), China, India, Turkey, and Eastern Europe.

Types of Walnuts: The most common varieties include the English (or Persian) walnut and the Black walnut. The English walnut is the most widely consumed and commercially produced.

Taste and Texture

Walnuts have a rich, mildly sweet, and slightly bitter flavor due to their tannins. When roasted, they develop a deeper, nuttier taste. Raw walnuts have a crunchy texture, while roasted walnuts become slightly more brittle and crispy. The inner kernel has a somewhat oily texture due to the high fat content.

Processing Methods

Walnuts are typically harvested in late autumn. Once the outer green husk splits, the nuts are collected either by shaking the trees or picking them manually.

After harvesting, walnuts are air-dried to reduce moisture content, which helps in preserving the nuts for long periods.
